A-bombed Tree

Kurogane Holly
(Rai Sanyo Shiseki Museum)
5-15 Fukukamachi, Naka-ku, Hiroshima (Rai Sanyo Shiseki Museum)

  (2013.12.14)
Although the stems and leaves that were on the ground were lost by the atomic bomb,
they then sprouted and became large.

  (2017.5.3)

The present tree shape is elongated and has no lateral spread,
but it seems that the original was thicker and the tree shape was also beautiful.
You can imagine the original size by looking at the root.

  (2018.10.14)

Near the tree there is a sturdy Bank of Japan Hiroshima branch, which mitigated the power of the atomic bomb.
Therefore, even if the ground part was lost, it was still able to survive.
The remains of the Bank of Japan Hiroshima Branch are currently displaying art exhibits.

Since Kurogane holly has males and females and this tree is female, it produces red fruits in winter.
If this tree is fine, you can see more red fruits.

(2024.5.19)
May is the season for Kurogane Holly flowers, so I visited to photograph them.
The red berries are still there, but the flowers have started to bloom and new leaves are visible.
The fallen red berries were spread out on the mossy ground like a painting.

 <How to visit>

Keep on the back of the Peace Memorial Museum and follow the main street to the left. Turn left on the tramway and when you see a stone building (Japan Bank Hiroshima Branch) on the right, turn right there and you will soon see the museum on the left. This tree is growing in the garden.
